    This is a unique and innovative opportunity to provide dental hygiene services in the pediatric medical clinic(s) and to become a fully integrated member of the primary care team.


    The dental hygienist working in the medical integrated model will provide preventative dental services, oral health education and care coordination for pediatric patients. The dental hygienist will work with the pediatrician, medical support staff and providers to facilitate the patient receiving dental hygiene services, and work with the patient, dental clinic and community partners to facilitate the patient receiving restorative care. This position require strong clinical and interpersonal skills, administrative and organizational skills, initiative and self-sufficiency, passion for community health and underserved populations. Knowledge and experience in expanded duty dental functions is key. Candidate must have a demonstrated passion and experience in the care and treatment of pediatric patients. This position is performed in a community dental health center and the dental hygienist will have an equitable role in dental health education activities and quality measures.


    Work with the medical support staff and providers to facilitate the patient receiving dental hygiene services (scheduled visits and warm hand-offs); work with the patient, dental clinic and community partners to facilitate the patient receiving restorative.

    Provide patient screening procedures: assessment of oral health conditions, review health history, caries risk assessment, oral hygiene instructions, anticipatory guidance, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking vitals.

    Provide care in multiple locations (medical exam room, dental clinic operatory, possibly others).Educate patients and colleagues on the importance of oral health and how to communicate this to patients.


    Sterilize own instruments, arrange equipment maintenance, and turn over the room between patients,

    Manage the patient scheduler in the electronic medical record (EMR).

    Maintain proper dental charting and documentation of the appointment (progress notes) in dental in the electronic dental records (EDR).

    Takes digital diagnostic radiographs and file in the appropriate section of the EDR.

    Remove calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth.

    Apply preventive materials to the teeth (e.g. sealants and fluorides).

    Teach patients and their caregivers the appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health.

    Perform documentation for quality standards, program metrics and activities. Compiles data and statistical analysis to present on program’s progress.

    Serve as the infection control officer, prepares and sterilizes instruments and equipment.

    Understanding and usable knowledge of the hygienist CDT billable codes and frequencies to ensure optimal patient care and income generation.


    Scheduling, insurance verification, using computers/dental and medical software/emails/Word/Excel, order dental supplies and consumables, order dental equipment, maintain compliance with OSHA and other regulations, maintain updated MSDS sheets.


    Work with the budgeting restraints of safety-net clinics.


    Interact with patients to help feel at ease before, during and after dental treatment.


    Provide patients with instructions for oral care pre and post treatment.


    Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain optimum oral health (e.g. brushing, flossing, counseling, good nutrition and tobacco cessation).


    Take impressions of patient’s teeth for casts (models of teeth).Maintain data integrity in the system for all patients.


    Help provide direct patient care in all dental specialties.


    Address all expanded duty functions as allowed by law.


    Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in cooperation with the school health administrative team. May be assigned to support a regular shelter in an assigned or assist in some aspect of emergency relief efforts. May be assigned to assist the RN in the evaluation of health needs or services in Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.



    High school or GED required. Training from an accredited Dental Hygiene Program and expanded duties training certification preferred. Bilingual in Spanish and/or Creole preferred.


    Minimum three (3) years experience, preferably in private/public sector dentistry.


    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.


    Current Florida RDH license


    Expanded duties training, cross-trained skills front to back preferred.
