    This position provides supervision for the skilled nursing care professionals and treatment of students in assigned areas of the county.  This position coordinates the daily activities of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other staff in the school health program; functions under the auspices of the Health Care District, liaising with school district administrators at a variety of schools including academic and secretarial staff providing clinical guidance to all school health staff.  Employees in this position perform duties in accordance with established regulations, policies, nursing standards, and medical instructions.  Performs other duties as assigned.

    Responsibilities

    Supervises the work of school health nurses clinical nurse leaders and other personnel as assigned; liaises with the nurse specialists and teaches and orients staff to the general policies, programs, and procedures; and advises the staff on issues, situations, and problems arising in the workplace.

    Provides leadership and direction to an assigned team of nurses on a daily basis.

    Coaches and mentors employees to improve the quality and quantity of clinical processes and outcomes of student health services.

    Evaluates employees through established evaluation criteria visiting schools regularly to meet with and evaluate the performance of employees to ensure the established nursing standards of practice and specific health related criteria are met.

    Conducts school assessments with the School Health Registered Nurses related to the clinical environment communicating frequently with the school administrator or designee; attends staff meetings; monitors the nurses’ practice and provides feedback and support related to all clinical and associated issues.

    Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job and aids subordinate nurses in developing professional knowledge and skills.

    Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings; monitors staff time and attendance on a daily basis utilizing the electronic software provided. Develops a plan to evaluate and counsel staff related to requests for time off during the school session if students are present.

    Ensures that care is delivered to each patient or student in accordance with quality standards and is documented in clinical records and on nursing care plans.

    Conducts annual performance appraisals and provides quality assurance and performance improvement on specific aspects for the department. Integrates continuous Quality and performance Improvement process in daily activities

    Assists the nurse educator in the development and delivery of the annual training, orientation and competency sessions for new and returning staff.

    Directs the work of employees to ensure the most effective use of time and resources.

    Advises and counsels nursing personnel about professional growth and advanced education; encourages staff to attend continuing education programs to meet licensure requirements.

    Actively seeks assistance from administrative staff as appropriate for solving clinical and management problems. Participates in self-study and review of the literature related to school health practices.

    Assists with developing and revising nursing procedures; makes surveys, studies, and reports.

    Actively participates on committees such as the Immunization Committee, the School Health Advisory Committee and any other committee as assigned.

    Provides regular input on program policies, procedures, and practices utilizing current trends and outcome based processes.

    Promotes an environment in which the student, School Health Registered Nurses and other members of the health support team and school based teams can work cooperatively toward common goals and objectives.

    Collaborates with the school staff to ensure coordinated provisions of the school health services.

    Responsible for the safe and effective nursing practice of subordinate nursing staff.

    Maintains appropriate certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits.

    Delegates responsibilities within the scope of personnel abilities, personnel policies, and professional obligations.

    Maintains communication and promotes cooperation with other areas and departments.

    Supports the HCD overall mission vision and values related to the delivery of health services county wide.

    Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes liaising with school health administrators for assistance in the deployment of nursing staff and others to community outreaches. May be required to assist in engaging the School Health Registered Nurses to support existing staffing in Red Cross shelters or assist the Red Cross Team in the evaluation and delivery of community services. Will maintain skills based listing of school nursing staff to assess if those staff and the incumbent will be needed to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    Associate’s degree in Nursing required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred. 

    Experience:

    Seven (7) to ten (10) years experience in school health nursing and minimum of two (2) years experience in a supervisory capacity.

    Certification:

    CPR, First Aid, and ITLS Certification preferred.

    Licensure:

    State of Florida Registered Nurse license required. Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
