General Statement of Job
This position performs and interprets diagnostic procedures in all areas of the Clinical Laboratory Department with the purpose of helping physicians diagnose and progress the outcome of patient treatment. The employee maintains daily quality control and preventive maintenance on instruments within the department.
Performs and interprets Chemistry, Hematology, Serology/Immunology, Immunohematology, and Basic Microbiology procedures for the Clinical Laboratory Department.
Records determinations and results for review by laboratory management and physician/caregiver personnel.
Maintains responsibility for patient identification, specimen labeling and collection verification or instructing other patient care providers or hospital personnel in collection and preservation techniques for all clinical laboratory specimens.
Sets up, evaluates and operates laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific diagnostic tests and assumes responsibility to maintain operations including preventative maintenance.
Maintains the daily quality control log for the assigned specific area within the Clinical Laboratory Department.
Complies with the hospital’s laboratory policies, procedures and quality control guidelines.
Completes all tests procedures accurately and in a timely manner with the priority of stat procedures.
Follows established hospital and departmental policies and procedures in reviewing and documenting critical tests and critical results.
Performs and records routine preventative maintenance and instrument function checks on all equipment within the department.
Processes reference lab work and Pathology specimens.
Evaluates collected laboratory data Finalizes reference lab reports assessing accuracy, completeness, timeliness, progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as needed.
Assists with the general laboratory inventory and supply ordering from the warehouse and approved vendors.
Documents rejected/redrawn specimens on appropriate specimen rejection logs.
Participates in the orientation and mentoring of new staff members recognizing importance of bringing new staff into a friendly and supportive work environment.
Performs and documents instrument troubleshooting as necessary.
Performs phlebotomy duties as needed.
Performs various clerical duties as required.
Receives, analyzes, and processes specimens according to physician’s order and request.
Obtains diagnostic results and analyzes as necessary.
Performs quality control testing on instruments as well as calibration.
Maintains instruments to ensure accurate readings.
Performs Proficiency Testing as required and follows established procedures.
Performs inventory checks and other special projects as necessary.
Cleans counters and machine tops daily.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Demonstrates age specific competence and knowledge of growth and development in providing care for each of the patient population from birth to geriatric age.
Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.
Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
One (1) to five (5) years experience required. Hospital Experience preferred.
Preference of certification as a Medical Technologist by a national certifying agency: American Medical Technology Certification, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), AAB, or NCA.
Licensed by the State of Florida as a Certified Laboratory Technologist (in all five areas or specific specialty) required. Licensed by the State of Florida as a Clinical Lab Supervisor preferred.
